Family Friendly Comfort Food

November 24, 2020 by Bianca Carey Spencer, Updated September 8, 2025

Hearty casseroles (that the kids will actually eat!), One Pot Pasta Recipes, Pies and Kid-Friendly Family Curry recipes to name just a few! If you are looking for Family Friendly Comfort Food, then you’re going to love these recipes!

A collage of photos showing different family comfort food dishes.

There’s something about this time of year, when it’s not quite Christmas but it’s getting cold and the days are getting much shorter, that makes me want to cook up loads of hearty comfort food.

For me, comfort food is all about the classic comfort food classics like pies, stews, hotpots, and pasta bakes.

If you are feeding a family then it’s important that the whole family will happily all eat the same thing which I know a lot of families struggle with.

But sometimes, it’s not about the food itself, but how you serve it! Casseroles are a great example of something that I would serve slightly differently to the kids than I would to my husband and I.

If you’d like to see how I serve it for the kids, then see how here:

What I Cook Versus How I Serve It

Sausages & Onion Gravy

Two sausages served to creamy mashed potato and green peas, covered in onion gravy.

When you are need of a hearty dinner, I don’t think you can beat sausage and mash! It’s like a hug in a bowl on a cold night!

But you can elevate this humble dish to the next level by making my onion gravy to go with it! – Get The Recipe Here

Chicken Lasagne

A large slice of chicken lasagne served on a white dinner plate, garnished with grated cheese.

Lasagne is one of those comforting dinners that always goes down well with the whole family!

Baked Chorizo Cheese Risotto

I’ve a few risotto recipes on the blog, like this Baked Butternut Squash Risotto which is great in the autumn when squash is in season or this Leftover Chicken Risotto that is great for roast season.

But this Baked Chorizo Cheese Risotto is my go to one pot comfort food recipe at the moment! – Get The Recipe Here

Irish Beef Stew

Irish beef stew served in a bright blue bowl and accompanied with buttered soda bread on the side.

I love a Slow Cooker Beef Stew but if don’t have a slow cooker and still want all the comfort that a good beef stew can offer, then try my Irish Beef Stew instead.

All the ingredients are cooked together in one pot and just left to do it’s thing while you get on with something else! – Get The Recipe Here
